Insecurity is a feeling that challenges many people today. They worry about what others think of them, they think everyone is against them, and their identities are unstable. Feelings of insecurity about their future, the economy, or life in general rob them of peace and joy every day. But this isn’t God’s best for us; He wants us to find our security in Him and to enjoy our lives.
When we look at the circumstances around us and feel insecure, we have a choice: turn our eyes on Jesus and away from those situations, or keep our eyes on the distressing events that are causing our feelings of insecurity. Jesus said to His disciples in John 14:1, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.” The key to overcoming insecurity is fixing our attention on Jesus and understanding that the only real security we have is in Him.
Insecurity is often rooted in fear. When we’re afraid of the future or if everything will work out, feelings of insecurity can surface. But we need to remember that God hasn’t given us a spirit that makes us fearful or timid; He has given us “power, love, and self-discipline” (2 Timothy 1:7). We don’t have to bow to fear; we have the power to discipline ourselves to focus on the security we have in Jesus. He is dependable. He is reliable. He is our security, no matter what’s going on around us or inside us.
We don’t have to live with feelings of insecurity or fear. God’s plan for us is that we find our security and stability in Him. He’s our Rock in the storm. He’s the Strong Tower in which we find safety and peace. When we put our trust in God, we are secure, and insecurity doesn’t stand a chance.
