Most of us have heard the statement, “If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.” This saying actually has a lot of truth in it. And everyone stands for something whether they realize it or not. Everything you post on social media, every word you speak, every action you take shows what you stand for. So here’s a question to ask yourself: Based on my words, actions, and attitudes, would others say that I stand up for Jesus?
It matters to Jesus whether we stand up for Him or not. In fact, in Luke 9:26 He said, “Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.” I don’t know about you, but I sure don’t want Jesus to be ashamed of me!
One of Jesus’s own disciples failed the “stand up for Jesus” test. Peter was determined to go to jail or even the grave for Jesus, but when the time came, he caved into the pressure and denied Him. Peter felt ashamed of what he did; he knew he had let Jesus down. But Jesus didn’t turn His back on Peter, and Peter became one of the boldest preachers proclaiming Jesus as the risen Messiah and urging people to believe in Him.
Even if you haven’t made a stand for Jesus in the past, you can start today. Decide ahead of time that you’ll honor Him with your words, actions, and attitude. Determine that you will stand for Jesus by loving your enemies, being kind to everyone, and being generous. Make the decision that you won’t laugh at the dirty jokes, you won’t participate in gossip, and you won’t neglect the house of God.
Standing for Jesus means doing what pleases and honors Him no matter the backlash or cost. After all, “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me” (Galatians 2:20).
